Samantha Humen, Flutist
As a flutist, Samatha Humen has been in the professional performance sphere since 2018. Prior to this, classical music has been a part of her life from the age of 5. Having performed in a variety of settings, Ms. Humen always seeks to create an accessible and welcoming environment for her audience to share in the experience of live music. Having participated in numerous masterclasses, with flutists Marina Piccinini, Alberto Almarza, Soo-Kyung Park, and Gareth McLearnon, among others, Ms. Humen has gained wonderful insights from notable flute players of today. Currently, she is based in the Greater Philadelphia region of Pennsylvania.
Possessing a Bachelor of Music from Marywood University and a Master of Music from Temple University, education has played a vital role in her development alongside performances. Currently, she is pursuing a Doctorate of Music Arts, continuing her private studies with Patrick Williams, associate Principal flute of the Philadelphia Orchestra.
During her graduate and professional studies, Ms. Humen expanded both her performance and educational horizons. Performances with the Symphony Orchestra, Opera company, New Music Ensemble (an ensemble whose focus is on highlighting and premiering new compositions at four concerts each year) and various chamber settings, Samantha seeks to maintain her versatility as a musician.
Her love of performance is only rivaled by her love of learning. The emphasis of a good performance being built on both time spent in the practice room, as well as time spent reading and learning the history of composers and repertoire is something Samantha holds close. For the culmination of her studies, her doctoral research will consist of a survey into the various schools of flute pedagogy, and conclude with a method to synthesize this information in order to best teach students by having a wide “tool-box” of approaches.
In addition to her busy performance schedule, Ms. Humen also has a deep passion for teaching. She maintains a private studio year-round and she is also on faculty for flute and chamber music at the Marywood Summer Music Academy, hosted by Marywood University in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Within her private studio down in the Greater Philadelphia region, Ms. Humen works with students of all ages and abilities. Whether the student has never held a flute before their first lesson, they want to improve for their own enjoyment, or they are looking for audition and recital preparation, Ms Humen’s main focus is on the growth of each individual students and their related goals. Through private instruction, fostering a love of music and an internal drive for personal improvement is a core tenant to Ms. Humen’s teaching philosophy.
